Novel mouthpiece device design for sleep apnea treatment

Sleep apnea is a chronic sleep disorder in which breathing stops temporarily during sleep. A medical mouthpiece device designed and developed by Dr. Ozgur Kocaturk and PhD. student Sefa Zulfikar with the initiation and collaboration of Dr. Albert Guvenis.  Clinical trials were carried out with Dr. Ceyda Erel Kirisoglu (Kozyatagi Acibadem Hospital). The team aims to develop a novel mouthpiece device that eliminates the drawbacks of the current oral appliances used for sleep apnea treatment. The efficacy of the proposed device was evaluated by the comparison of oropharyngeal volumes through MRI scans and polysomnographic variables.
